Six years after 9/11, the US has still not come to terms with the loss of its Twin Towers. Every New Yorker who went over Ground Zero, the site of terrorism’s most shocking incident, have reported a sense of vacuum post the attack on the city scape. The same sense of loss has also been with Indians who are frequent travellers to the city.

BT got some of them to express their feelings...
Urmila Matondkar — I think anybody who’s seen the Twin Towers misses the imposing structure. Just imagine a person who must have witnessed the plane crashing into the buildings! I personally find it unbearable to look that way and I have not gone that side since. To me, 9/11 was the ultimate atrocity against human kind. It made us think that nothing is forever.
Anna Singh — Whenever you look at the place they used to stand on, it’s not like you miss the buildings, but the devastation that occurred has had lasting and crippling effects on people worldwide. It has caused a deep vacuum and you feel a deep sense of pain.
Chhaya Momaya — I see a lot more energy and zest for life amongst the people there. It’s not as if the Twin Towers were the Statue of Liberty which people go to see.
Dilip De — It was a landmark in the city and also a symbol of capitalism. And the financial district of not only USA, but the whole world was around that area. With the demolition of the Twin Towers, the place looks naked.
Neeta Lulla — Whenever I go to New York, there is a definite vacuum when I glance up at the skyline and don’t see the Twin Towers. They were so familiar to look at, almost like an old relative or friend.
Azeem Khan — The fact that the World Trade Centre is no more standing tall has altered my perception of New York. But I do hope that the new Freedom Towers that will come up in its place will become as well known icons of the Big Apple.
